Gold Panning

Gold Panning is a gathering activity that runs off the Mining skill. Instead of swinging at a mountain face, you sift the water's edge — any river, lake or coast — for gold nuggets, gems and Rough Stones.

Nuggets are not a crafting resource. They are traded up through Harry Johnson, The Gold Panner, into larger nuggets, Gold Bricks and eventually bank checks, or handed in against Gold Panning Orders for gold, Rough Stones and a chance at an Epic item.

  • Gold Pans are crafted by tinkers, under Tools in the tinkering menu.
  • Requires 40.0 Tinkering and 4 Iron Ingots.
  • A standard pan holds 50 finds. An exceptional pan holds twice that, 100.
  • A failed sift costs nothing — only successful finds consume a use.

The pan carries the same right-click menu as a pickaxe:

  • Set to Ore — nuggets only.
  • Set to Ore and Gems — allows a sift to wash up a classic gem in place of a nugget.

The setting is shared with your pickaxe. Changing it on one changes it on the other.

The Ore and Gems mode only produces gems once you have read Mining for Quality Gems.

  1. Stand within 2 tiles of the water, on foot.
  2. Double-click the pan.
  3. Target the water.

Your character bows to the water and a splash marks the sift.

Each stretch of water holds 5 to 10 nuggets and refills in 10 to 20 minutes, so keep moving along the shore rather than working one spot dry.

Nugget size is gated by your Mining skill. Skill bonuses from jewellery count toward these thresholds.

Nugget Mining Required
Small Gold Nugget 95.0
Medium Gold Nugget 110.0
Large Gold Nugget 120.0

At 100.0 base Mining and above, a sift can turn up more than a nugget:

  • Rare gems and Delicate Scales (an imbuing ingredient) alongside your nugget.
  • Rough Stones, now and then, as you sift.

Rough Stones come up far more often from the pan than from mining or chopping wood, which makes panning the fastest route to them for Rune Crafting and Bio-Engineering.

A Rough Stone found while panning completes the Mine a Rough Stone daily task (see Daily Tasks).

Harry Johnson, The Gold Panner greets you with tips as you approach. Drop nuggets on him to trade up:

You Give You Receive
10 Small Gold Nuggets 1 Medium Gold Nugget
5 Medium Gold Nuggets 1 Large Gold Nugget
3 Large Gold Nuggets 1 Gold Brick
2 Gold Bricks 20,000 gold Bank Check

Harry takes whole lots only and hands back any remainder, so you can safely drop an entire stack on him at once.

Right-click Harry Johnson and choose Talk to receive a Gold Panning Order Deed. The deed is blessed and asks for a set quantity of one kind of goods:

Goods Requested Quantity
Small Gold Nuggets 80 to 200
Medium Gold Nuggets 25 to 60
Large Gold Nuggets 12 to 40
Gold Bricks 3 to 8

The deed's tooltip shows how many you have gathered so far.

  1. Double-click the deed and target matching nuggets or bricks in your own backpack.
  2. Part stacks are fine — the deed takes what it needs and leaves the rest.
  3. Goods on the ground or in other containers are not accepted.
  4. When the order is full, the deed reads Order Fulfilled.

Drop a filled deed on Harry and he pays you on the spot:

  • A Bank Check, plus Rough Stones. The bigger the order, the better the pay.
  • Unfilled deeds are handed straight back.

With 100.0 base Mining, every filled order also carries a chance at an Epic item, with larger orders more likely to hold one. The Double Epic Chance perk doubles that chance, and Harry lets you know when it happens.

Epics come from handing in orders, not from sifting.

Every order you turn in also has a small chance of Harry parting with a blessed Infinite Use Shovel along with your pay.

  • Harry writes one order per half hour.
  • Turn in a filled order and you may take a new one at once.
  • Cast one aside unfinished and you wait the full 30 minutes for another.
  • Your first order is available right away.

The Double Harvest Amounts perk doubles what you pull from gold panning, alongside mining, lumberjacking and fishing. See Perks.
